Karen L. Alaniz taught special education for fifteen years.  When health changes made it difficult to teach she embarked on a new career as a freelance writer.  She has written a book called, “Breaking the Code-A Daughter’s Journey” and is currently looking for the perfect agent to represent it.  She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, three children, and her dog Togo.

Joshua Booth is a freelance writer in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has worked with a variety of SPMI patients. You can read more of his work in The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, Brittle Star, Edifice Wrecked, Opium Magazine, The Duck&Herring Pocket Field Guide and other publications. He is working on a book Diary of a Quitter based on this article.

Janine Boldrin is a writer who lives in Carrboro, NC with her husband and two sons.

Sally Clay has been a leader in the mental health consumer/survivor movement for over 25 years and helped to found four peer-run services in Maine, upstate New York, Florida, and the national Altered States of the Arts. She participated in two federal research studies in Florida and edited a book about consumer-operated programs called On Our Own, Together: Peer Programs for People with Mental Illness. Laura Yeager is a writer who lives in Akron, Ohio. She writes fiction and nonfiction and teaches writing at Gotham Writers’ Workshop. She has been living with bipolar illness since 1991.

Yossi Chaim was the oldest child of Michoel and Leah Paley.  He was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of nine in Sept 1997.  His form of cancer was very resistant to treatment, and he underwent a bone marrow transplant with an unrelated donor in Jan. 1998.  When Yossi was 2 years, 9 months, post-transplant, he relapsed.  After three rounds of unsuccessful chemo, he underwent a second transplant.    His full story may be found at http://www.geocities.com/mugsisme/yossi.html
